SKF announced collaboration with Carnegie Clean Energy Limited to aid the advancement of Carnegie's CETO wave energy technology. This partnership will concentrate on the Power Take-Off (PTO) system for Carnegie's CETO units, which convert wave energy into electricity.

The CETO system is fully submerged, point absorber wave energy device. A buoy is anchored to the seabed and stationed at a couple of metres below the ocean surface - its motion will follow the motion of the waves, which drives the PTO that outputs electrical power for the grid.

According to the agreement, work is now being conducted between Carnegie and SKF on the design and production of the PTO system. Even before the partnership, SKF undertook some engineering designs and development work for the bearing and shaft manufacturing part of the PTO system under a Development Agreement. SKF was subsequently awarded a contract for the manufacture of three PTO units for deployment at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform.

SKF continues to pursue engagements in ocean energy activities, including its collaboration with Minesto on reliable tidal kite technology in The Atlantic Sea near the Faroe Islands and its recent Memorandum of Understanding with Proteus Marine Renewables and GE Vernova to team together on veriable private capital for large-scale tidal stream energy projects.

“Ocean energy is expected to supply at least 10% of global energy in the future. The challenge is proving, optimizing, and preparing ocean energy technologies for commercialization. By collaborating to innovate, we develop cutting-edge technologies at a fast pace to drive sustainable benefit,” said Michael Baumann, Global Application Account Manager, Ocean Energy at SKF. “This partnership with Carnegie reinforces our commitment to advancing wave energy technology and supporting renewable energy solutions. With our broad supply chain in combination with SKF rotating equipment expertise, we accelerate the industrialisation and commercialisation of the CETO technology to harvest the vast potential of Wave Energy.”
